I am going to have a 6 hour layover in Detroit, Michigan. Any ideas on what we should do?
I am going to Germany on the 23rd of December, and we are going to have a layover in Detroit, Michigan, at the airport. Is there anything around there that we should go see that is within walking distance? We will have no vehicle, but would like to see as much as possible.

- Unfortunately, there is not much that is in walking distance. If you had a car you could go downtown Detroit, which is only about a 15 minute drive, and check out the Hockeytown Cafe which is right across from Comerica Park where the Detroit Tigers play. Other than that, there really isn't much to do. The new Northwest terminal at Detroit is really nice though, there are a lot of restaurants and places to hang out, so if you can get into that terminal it would make your layover a little better. My suggestion though, take a nap and bring a good book.
- It isn't worth trying to leave the area of the airport for a 6 hour layover. Remember it will take you an hour to get anywhere and you have to be back at the airport 2 hours before your flight. One option would be to go to an airport hotel (use their shuttle) and have a nice meal before returning to the airport. Another option would be to purchase day passes to the airline lounge: http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/airport_information/delta_sky_club/index.jsp
- Nothing within walking distance but you could take a cab. Make sure to get the cab companies phone number to ensure someone will be there to take you back to the airport on time. Take a cab to Greenfield Village and visit the Henry Ford museum. It's 12 miles from the airport. See the car JFK was in while shot, the chair Abe Lincoln was in while shot. The bus Rosa Parks refused to move to the back on. And a ton more. Voted America's greatest history attraction. The village is also great to tour but not so much in the winter time. http://thehenryford.org/museum/exhibits.aspx Or take a cab to downtown detroit (about 15 miles) to Greektown many great restaurants and a casino. Also nearby Hockeytown Cafe and Chelis Chili. http://www.visitgreektown.com/ http://www.greektowncasino.com/ http://www.hockeytowncafe.com/ http://www.chelischilibar.com/ 6 hours is plenty of time to see some stuff and be back in plenty of time. But nothing to walk to.
- Stay in the airport! The northwest terminal is actually really nice. You can get something to eat and walk around. Its not worth it to leave the airport. Since your going so close to Christmas, there will be a lot of traffiic and it will take a long time to get back in the airport.
- Stay in the airport and relax. You really only have 3 hours to work with and can not walk to anything close.
